Debra Mullins

Welcome to the cyber home of author Debra Mullins (that would be me).

I’ve been writing since I was a child. My earliest memory was an assignment in first grade, where the teacher gave us two pieces of paper to fold in half to make a book. In this book, we were supposed to retell one of Aesop’s fables. I loved the assignment, but I changed the ending to my fable so it was a happy ending. My teacher praised me for creativity.

The next day we had a substitute, and she gave us the same assignment. I did the same thing, retold a fable but gave it a happy ending. The substitute teacher tore my book in half and scolded me for not following directions. My first rejection!

I have always lived most of my life with my nose in a book, either reading one or writing one. My childhood was not great, so I loved to curl up somewhere with a book and let the story help me escape to someplace else where my problems didn’t exist. (My sister says she doesn’t have a single family photo of me where I do not have a book in my hands.) I love story; I live and breathe it. And I always need to know how it ends. If this were hundreds of years ago, I might have been the tribe storyteller, passing oral history down through generations. And maybe I was—in another life.

Over the past few years, our world has changed dramatically. We’ve all felt it. Everyday life is no longer the same. Many of us have suffered losses, whether that means people we have lost, skills, jobs, homes, health. I’ve had many of those, including my writing. After several hard losses, the words have eluded me for some time. But now they’re coming back, and I’m ready to start creating stories again, the kind into which people can escape and forget about real life for a while. The kind of stories that saved me as a child.

I write romance because I love happy endings. I write historical and paranormal stories because they are far removed from today’s world and provide a real escape for me. Who wouldn’t want to live in a simpler time like Regency England or the American Old West, where there was no such thing as social media, cell phones or COVID? Who wouldn’t want to live in a world where paranormal powers exist, where good is always triumphing over evil? Sign me up!

Please enjoy touring the site. I hope you find something here that can ease your heart for at least a little while. Sometimes, all we need is a few moments to take a breath.

All the best,
Deb
